No PC. No slides. No flipchart. How about your presentation?

A few days ago, I had an interesting feedback from Jürgen, one of the attendees of my last Black Belt Presenter™ workshop. I was addressing presentation preparation issues. At the beginning of the workshop, a couple of guys were constantly looking at the screen during their presentation. This was due to uncertainty and stress. This always originates from the lack of preparation. Of course, the audience deciphers this easily and understands the reasons why. If this happens to you, are you sure that you'll meet your target? Good preparation is the unique response and it lies in your hands. You don't need crutches or canes when you can walk normally, do you?

Now I come to the point Jürgen made: "You should be able to make your presentation without anything but your head, your voice and your body language. Zero slide."

This is a vital observation. Indeed, great communicators don't need slides. Because they are in full control of their contents. Of course most of them use slides, as it reinforces their message, but they could perfectly do without. This should inspire us when we are about to give a presentation. What would happen if, for any reason, you were rid of your slides, PC and paper board? Can you be as efficient without slides as you hope you are with your full presentation bag of tricks? If not, be aware that this situation is not unrealistic. You can fall in this trap some day.

→ What to do?

1. Apply the best practices I have described in my PowerPoint Guide.

2. Use the PowerPoint notes pages to write down your text in spoken language.

3. Learn it by heart.

4. Train yourself by using your slides without looking at them.

5. Do the same without slides.

You're all set. Now the time has come to connect with your audience...

Any doubt it works? OK. Let's jump to a real life example:  Seth is a junior manager that I have coached for a couple of months. He had to present a new business case for his product. He was not well-known by top management, as he was still very young, a little shy and modest. I told him that he couldn't miss this business plan opportunity to make a great impression. He knew his business plan perfectly, a 40-page very well-documented analysis and action plan. He had 15 minutes to convince and sell his stuff. So we drew up a couple of simple but very convincing slides. If you're familiar with this site you know how I'm fighting to get business people designing light, powerful, illustrated and animated slides. So he had great slides. I insisted on him knowing everything by heart. So he did.

What was the result? He didn't look more than 3 or 4 times at the screen during the presentation. He sold his plan from slide one like a champion and made a terrific impression that has helped him get the responsibility of a full product line today. Sure his well-structured slides ideally supported his message but he could have done everything perfectly without slides.

Suppose that you're caught by surprise by your material being evaporated, going retro without slides but with your knowledge and skills is your unique alternative. More precisely, to convince your audience without material, you need to have reached excellence in knowing your subject and mastering communication skills.

The more you become a master in your field, the fewer tools you need. Remember: your slides shouldn't be your crutches or canes! So, be autonomous. Be excellently prepared, and fire off!

Ultimately, if you want to generate audience enthusiasm and conviction, you ought to give a performance. Not a presentation.
