Big event: avoid mistakes made by the majors...

I was recently asked to give a discrete critical advice on the presentation of an esteemed investment bank. I'd like you to take advantage of what I saw and heard and eventually learn from it. I'd like to emphasize that although it was a big event, it still was lacking some of the basics. In my 25-year presentation experience, nothing exceptional, I must say.

1. The presenter --the CEO in person-- was put behind a conference lectern. Traditional image. Very comfortable indeed to put your papers if you lack preparation or had to rush to the show. However, it puts a barrier between you and your audience. Well, to me, you can do better. Think about it. Is this what you're looking for?

2. Behind this fine gentleman, a giant wall trumpeting the name and logo of the investment bank. It has become stereotype, in Europe too OK, but don't guests know where they are? What is the added value? Branding? Really? Couldn't we think a bit more creatively?

3. The screen. Gosh! The screen. Very large indeed. Huge. But with a poor projector of 1500 lumens to the max, where daylight conditions and distance would have commanded 3000 to 5000 lumens! How can that be?

5. The slides. Well, not too bad for a junior communication team with a tight schedule, but not adapted to an international audience. Poorly contrasted graphs, small text, difficult to read, and limited graphical creativity. Combine this with projection weaknesses and you have a problem there.

Of course, it went "OK", the message was clear, as the leading speaker was a bright professional and the following cocktail very stylished... But major events should be much smarter.

Couldn't we all benefit from this story?

1. Remove the conference lectern. Move freely.

2. No papers.

3. Keep your environment sober.

4. 2500 lumens is the minimum brightness for a major event
